Allen Wilson Maxwell, Jr.
April 19, 1943 - March 10, 2014

Allen Wilson Maxwell, Jr., age 70, of Monticello passed away Monday, March 10, 2014, at his home in Monticello. He was born April 19, 1943, in Pine Bluff, AR to the late Allen Wilson Maxwell, Sr. and Ruby Lee Pearson Maxwell. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Dale Maxwell and a sister, Ginny Maxwell.

He was currently serving as Mayor of Monticello. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Twenty For The Future and was a Mason. He was a graduate of Warren High School where he played football, basketball and ran track. After graduating from Warren, Allen married his high school sweetheart, Dana Rough and enrolled at Arkansas A&M College where he played football in 1961 and 1962. He then became employed at Southwestern Bell Telephone Company in 1963 where he worked for 29 years before his retirement.

After retiring, he went to work for Congressman Jay Dickey at his Pine Bluff congressional office as District Director and later was Chief of Staff before becoming employed by UAP Timberland as a Human Resources Manager. Allen was also an Arkansas State Representative for three terms. He then was elected Mayor of Monticello where he has served for almost four years.

As Mayor, he was instrumental in many projects such as I530 funding, completion of the Monticello Sports Complex, implementation of the water improvement system, completed the restoration of the sewer treatment facility, completion of the new Monticello Fire Station and various other projects. He was a charter board member of the Southeast Arkansas Cornerstone Coalition. Allen was a strong backer for many Monticello and Southeast Arkansas economic development projects.

He is survived by his wife, Dana Rough Maxwell of Monticello; one daughter, Leslie Paige Maxwell Chase and husband Dr. Tim Chase of Monticello; one son, Allen Wilson Maxwell, III and wife Leigh of Madison, WI; three brothers, Tommy Maxwell and wife Beth of Monticello, Jerry Maxwell and wife Gale of Tonti Town, AR and Dr. Ralph Maxwell and wife Rhonda of Fayetteville; two granddaughters, Summer and Madisyn Chase both of Monticello; two grandsons, Pearson Maxwell of Madison, WI and Tommy Lopez of Monticello; a sister-in-law, Susanne Maxwell of Conway; two very special family members, Eddie Colvin of Dallas, TX and Zhenya (Eugene) Timonin of Novgorad, Russia; a brother-in-law, Rick Rough and wife Judy of Little Rock; and numerous nieces and nephews.
