December 8, 1954 - May 20, 2025
JOETTE FURLOUGH, ESQUIRE was born December 8, 1954, and passed away May 20, 2025.
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Joette Furlough, Esq., a trailblazing healthcare attorney whose distinguished 44-year legal career set the standard for excellence in Texas Health Care Law. She was a devoted mother, doting grandmother, and treasured friend whose legacy of compassion, faith, and resilience will endure in the lives she touched. After graduating from Arthur W. Radford High School (Honolulu, HI) and the University of Arkansas at Monticello, Joette earned her Juris Doctor from Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law in 1980 and was admitted to the State Bar of Texas in 1981. Over the course of her career, she gained licensure in Arkansas and Virginia and was admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court, as well as the Northern, Southern, and Western Districts of Texasâ€"demonstrating her extraordinary commitment to serving clients across jurisdictions with tremendous skill and integrity. Based in Dallas, Joette built a respected multi-state solo practice that spanned Health Care Law, Arbitration & Mediation, Business Law, Aviation Law, as well as Elder and Family Law. She guided hospitals, medical professionals, and families with equal parts precision and compassion. Her clients and colleagues knew her as a brilliant legal mind, a fierce advocate, gifted educator and a woman of unwavering ethical standards. Beyond her career, Joette's greatest fulfillment came from her family and the community of friends she held close. A devoted mother, she nurtured her daughter with an unwavering strength, leading by example with kindness, service, and grace. As an incredible grandmother, her ''grandchuckles''â€"Joy, Grace, and Bostonâ€"were the light of her life. She cherished every moment, story, and milestone with them. Her friends remember her as a wise confidante, generous encourager, and a faithful keeper of shared memories. Joette was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Joyce Lee Richardson Furlough and Lt. Col. Horace R. Furlough, Retired, and by her husbands, James L. Webber and H. Jack Burchfield, as well as many close friends, aunts and uncles. She is survived by her daughter, Jenna Schoen (Nolensville, TN), and her son-in-law, Matt Schoen; her adored grandchildren, Joy, Grace, and Boston Schoen; her devoted friend and companion, Jeffrey M. O'Donnell; her brother, Lt. Col. Blake Furlough, Retired, (Jill) and his family (Yellow Springs, OH); two uncles, Jennings ''Jinx'' Furlough (Brandenburg, KY) and Allen J. Martin (Chattanooga, TN); and many loving cousins across the country. Her family and precious circle of friends, Kim Hedges Schmoll, Linda Hammett-Morgan James McMillan, Fritz McKenzie, J.D. and Brenda Jiles (and family), among many others, will continue to carry forward her legacy of faith, resilience, grace, and excellence. Joette's faith sustained her through every chapter of life. We rejoice knowing she is now dancing on the streets of heaven, reunited with her cherished mother and embraced by the eternal peace she believed in so deeply.
