He was a retired Pilot and teacher and was of the Baptist faith. Gary loved watching football and baseball games, especially those that his grandchildren participated in. He hardly ever missed a game. He also enjoyed watching Fox News but his greatest passion was flying airplanes. Gary was a United States Air Force Veteran proudly serving his country for 21 years. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by the mother of his children, Roberta Matheny; and a son, Guy Matheny.
Survivors include his children, Gerald Matheny and wife Joy of Dubois, WY, Doug Matheny and wife Evelyn of Killeen, TX and David Matheny and wife Tammy of Springdale, AR; two grandsons that were like children to him, Cody Matheny of Thousand Oaks, CA and Justin Matheny of McGehee; grandchildren, Matt Matheny of Siloam Springs, Alex and Arianna Matheny; three great grandchildren, Carson, Jake and Rhett Matheny; along with his loving wife, Susie Reynolds Matheny of Monticello.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 9, 2026, at Stephenson-Dearman Funeral Chapel with Rev. Gerald Matheny officiating. There will be a visitation one hour preceding the funeral service from 10:00-11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers are Wade Wolfe, Landon Wolfe, Layton Wolfe, Jake Matheny, Carson Matheny, Jared Clark, Cody Matheny and Justin Matheny. Serving as honorary pallbearers are Larry Hargis, Sammy Simpson, Bennie Ryburn, III and James Gathings.
