He was retired from the Arkansas Department of Transportation and was of the Baptist faith. Paul enjoyed hunting, being a cattleman and just visiting with family and friends. He also loved watching sports and all of his shows on television but, his greatest passion was his family. His family came first and he deeply cherished them above all. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Cater; four brothers, Harry Cater, George Cater, Stanley Cater and James Overton Cater, Jr.; and two sisters, Betty Sue Rabb and Maxine Rendon.
He is survived by three sons, Jackie Cater and wife Lisa, Mark Cater and wife Meranda and Brian Cater and wife Keri; a daughter, Paula Myres and husband Phillip; a step-son, Mike Boyd; a step daughter, Kathy Boyd; a step daughter-in-law, Teresa Boyd; ten grandchildren; two honorary sons, Rodney Cash and Bud Todd; along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 26, 2026, at Stephenson-Dearman Funeral Chapel with Rev. Jason Cater officiating. There will be a visitation from 10:00-11:00 a.m. preceding the funeral service. Burial will be in Campground Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers are Zach Cater, Rodney Cash, Bud Todd, Brian Cater, Layton Cater, Weston Cater, Tanner Cater, Landon Myres, Danny Harrison and Allen Hunt. Serving as honorary pallbearers are Donny Cater and Billy Mitchell.
