"Gerald Bates, Jr. and Family,
I am truly saddened to hear of your recent loss and would like to express my sincere condolences to you and your family on the recent passing of your mother. I met Ms. Alice when I worked the switchboard at UAM from 1979-1983. She was a very sweet lady and she loved her family very much. Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.

"Our deepest sympathy goes out to you. We were at homecoming this past Sunday at Northside when we learned of Miss Alice's death. I remember the good times we shared living across the street from one another and at church and seeing her at school all the time. She was a very sweet lady. Also, to Miss Barta, sorry we did not get to see you Sunday, but we understand. You and rest of family, take care."
