George Akin, age 77, of Monticello passed away Wednesday, August 8, 2018, at Drew Memorial Hospital in Monticello. He was born August 26, 1940, in Monticello, AR to the late Cecil Woodrow Akin and Christine Bostian Akin.

He was born and raised in Drew County and was very proud of it. He would always say the air was better in Drew County. He graduated Monticello High School where he found the love of his life, Patricia Busby. He worked at Safeway/Harvest Foods for more than 44 years. There he met so many people and kept up with their families. He loved his Sunday School Class at First Baptist Church where he was a member. He had an incredible love for horses. He loved nothing more than to see a horse develop into something outstanding. He loved his family, which not only meant blood but his large extended family, enjoying every moment they had together. He loved watching the interaction of them and smiled as he watched. He was everyone's Papa George. He taught his children that respect and kindness was a must. Caring for people and helping others was just born in him.

He is preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Cecil Akin, Jr. Survivors are his wife of 59 years Patricia Busby Akin of Monticello; a daughter, Anita A. Tennyson and spouse Drew; a son, George Robert Akin, Jr and spouse Cindy T. Akin; grandchildren, Justin Michael Evans (Kimberly), Ashley E. Kussman (Larry), Britni L. Akin (Chase Lott), Tess Tennyson, Kinsley L. Vickers (Hunter); great grandchildren, Boston Akin, Claire Evans, Adam Kussman, Jake Evans, Brycen Kussman and Owen Evans; the Busby and Akin Clans; a brother from another mother, Gordan Hopkins (Tibby); two sisters, Mary Elizabeth Maesenholder and Sarah Garate; and one special cousin who was like a brother to him, Joe Akin (Barbara).

Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m., Sunday, August 12, 2018 at First Baptist Church in Monticello with Rev. Will McKay and Rev. Dennis Dodson officiating. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Saturday night at Stephenson-Dearman Funeral Home. Memorials may be given to First Baptist Church, 413 North Main, Monticello, AR 71657. We are so sorry for your loss. Mr George always had a friendly word and an easy smile that made a person feel
welcome. He was one of the friendliest people we met when we first moved to Monticello. He had a special way of telling a story and smiling that lit up his face and brought a twinkle to his eyes. You just had to smile when he did because you could feel his kindness and joy. We will miss seeing him around town. ~Julie & Dan

Pat, I was so saddened when I read of your loss of George. I think of those long ago days when we were all young and the world was ours. The good Lord in his infinite wisdom didn't make another like George. He was always happy, fun and ready for some mischief. The rare occasion I've seen you the last few years he did not seem to have changed. He was always "just George". I know you will miss him greatly but time does have a way of moving on and it will for us too. My prayer is that the Lord will give you the peace, comfort and strength that only He can and that you will
unfailingly trust his loving, healing arms to carry you through.
    Love, Carole (Johns)

Pat and family, It’s always difficult finding words to say to families left behind, so I’ll say George’s life speaks for him. My neighbors since 1972 and members of the same church, I’ve just always known George. I’m going to miss seeing him at church and hearing him say “Hi Faye Lee”. He and Pat always sat in the same pew each Sunday faithfully. Such a happy couple and blessed with a large family, so I know in Pat will be comforted by them, but will also miss her George. I pray God’s presence during your grief and thankful for all the great memories you have shared.
