My childhood was blessed with big family gatherings at Grandma Kettinger's house on Sherwood Ave in Kalamazoo. Those gatherings usually included Uncle Chuck. He was the "fun" uncle that would joke around and tease my sister and me.
I have a later memory (when I was in high school, I believe) of running to Chicago in a U-Haul with no radio or air conditioning to pick something up for Grandma Alley (for her place on Fellows Ct)... It was a rough ride on a hot summer day, but Chuck took it all in stride. He did what he needed to do to help his mother.
And as I pause while writing this, I am struck by a gentle sadness... shards of memories bring a smile of times gone by... I am thankful to have had an uncle like Uncle Chuck.
