Sister Velma Lee was born over a century ago on April 16, 1910 in Monticello to Jeanette Binns and Sirenus Binns. Velma moved to Cleveland, Ohio after graduating high school. Velma was employed, but was a homemaker most of her life.

She was united in matrimony to Peter Green and Robert Lee both whom preceded her in death as did her parents, step-father Fleming Deboles, and a sister Beatrice Hicks.

Velma accepted Christ at a young age and was a faithful member of First Baptist Church, and sang in the choir until her health failed. Velma was also an honoree member of the Effie E. Brooks Civic Club.

Velma was admitted to the Woods of Monticello (Formerly Beverly Health Care Center) on January 16, 2006 and there she met her second family. She made many friends and was loved by everyone. Velma was a feisty, strong willed woman who showed love and devotion for family and friends. She possessed a kindness and concern for others.

To cherish her memories are; nephew, A.J. Hicks, Jr. and niece, Velma J. Hicks, both of Southfield, MI; two great-nieces, Vicky Harris of Monticello and Raven Cole of Little Rock; two great-great nieces, Tierra Harris of Conway and Imani James of Little Rock; great-great-nephew, Terrez Grider of Conway; great-great-great nephew, Zaydin Grider of Fayetteville; great-great-great niece, Amari Ewing of Little Rock; The Woods Nursing and Rehab Staff and all of her friends in the community.

I met Miss Velma about two years ago. She was the unofficial greeter at The Woods because she cheerfully spoke to everyone as they entered, and she asked how they were doing. I was truly blessed to know this remarkable lady.

So sorry for Ms Velma's passing but happy that she has gone home to be with her love ones in God's Home for her. I met her when I would visit a friend at the Woods. I love to stop and talk to her and sometime help push her chair down the hall. I ask about her last week and the nurse told me she was was not doing well. What a dear lady i know her family was proud of her. Love to you all

I will miss the many hilarious encounters Ms. Velma and I had at the Woods. She would indeed keep you laughing. It is a blessing to be able to live as long as she did. Cherish the moments that you were able to spend with her. Vicky, I will keep you and your family in my prayers.

Miss Velma was my mom's friend at The Woods. I'll always remember the two of them laughing and fussing. They are both in Heaven now, laughing and fussing. God bless Miss Velma's family and may they celebrate the long life she had and the peace she has now with our Lord.

Our church has a service once a month at the Woods. We loved Miss Velma. She would sing and lead during every song. We will miss her but find comfort in knowing she is with Jesus.
